Brian Ganter:

Scott Talan:

A professor in public communication, Scott Talan has worked in media, PR, and communications. On Pinterest, he shares fonts, designs, visual oddities, and really interesting spaces for students and visitors alike.

Prof Jess:

New Ph.D. and assistant professor Jess has a wealth of pins in sociology. Through her Pinterest boards, Jess explores sexuality, work, emotion, cultural diversity, race, sports, and more. You can also learn about research methods and innovative projects from her.

Bill Silcock:

ASU Professor Bill Silcock specializes in global news, social media, and ethics. Check out his pins to learn about poets, vinyl, inspirational figures in media, and more.

Steve VanderLeest:

Steve VanderLeest is a professor of Engineering at Calvin College, sharing his love of technology, maps, and iPhone geography here on Pinterest. VanderLeest even shares interesting art and old family photos.

Bonnie Lafazan:

This academic librarian shares pins of the most beautiful libraries, cool tech stuff, and fun library musings.

Dan Jackson:

Historian Dan Jackson’s Pinerest boards are full of interesting historic relics, especially old photographs, uniforms, and Arcania.

Christine Haberkorn, PhD:

Christine Haberkorn studies social change and awareness building in communities. Check out her Pinterest boards to learn about how life experience can be a changemaker, plus find books that offer inspiration for changemakers.

The Brooklyn Institute for Social Research:

If you’re interested in social research, this Pinterest account is one to check out. Learn about important texts projects, classes, and intellectual support for social research from The Brooklyn Institute for Social Research.

Lisa Franzen-Castle:
Dr. Franzen-Castle is an extension nutrition specialist at the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center. On her Pinterest account, you’ll find a great collection of resources for healthy eating, smart cooking, food safety, and getting active.

John Hopkins:

A researcher of American language and culture, especially immigrants, John Hopkins offers a Pinterest account full of interesting American history. Find historical posters, classic photos, and interesting images through John Hopkins’ lens.

Professor DeVore:

Professor DeVore works on literature and communication at Nicolet College. On her Pinterest board, you can find interesting juxtapositions like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as well as Gothic inspiration.

Professor Kee:

Professor Kee’s Pinterest account offers an interesting resource for pharmacy students. She highlights great pharmacy books, vintage pharmacy ads, patient education, and even pharmacy student humor.

Professor Reineke:

Professor Reineke teaches and researches religion at the University of Northern Iowa. Using Pinterest, she shares a visual presentation of ideas, learning, and resources in all major religions for her students and other interested parties.

Ozzie Zehner:

UC Berkeley visiting scholar and author of Greein Illusions Ozzie Zehner is a major explorer of the secrets behind clean energy and environmentalism. Check out his Pinterest board, Green Illusions, to find out about nuclear energy, road access in rainforests, tiny parks, and the dark side of solar energy.

Social Media for Libraries

Are you wondering how to use social media to engage students?  This professional development session  focused on new social media tools such as Pinterest, Google + and the new Facebook timeline. Participants learned how to use these tools to market services and ultimately create an engaged community.

Remember when using social media:

Define your goal- What is your goal? Will using social media accomplish that goal? Which tool is the best online tool to use to meet your goal?

Take the Risk- It is important to spell check and be consistent. However, no one is perfect all of the time.  Don’t let that fear stop you from using social media.

Use best practices- Find others that are creating exciting and engaging social media pages and outlets. If you have a college social media manager try reaching out to him or her to ask questions and advice.

Have fun! - Social media has an aspect of fun to it. It is really all about personality. If your brand was a person what would their “voice” be like?

These tools aren’t just for recipes and design, they can be used to develop valuable online networking relationships, provide best practices and spark your next idea for the classroom.

Ashland or Bust...

Soon I will be on the road to Ashland to present, Social Media for Libraries: Engaging the Digital Native. I am so excited!  If you haven’t heard, I am a self proclaimed social media advocate. Yes, I am in fact one of those annoying people that talk about facebook like its real life, well because it is. I chat about social media excessively, and am constantly researching and following its changing landscape daily.  As a strategist for Gateway’s facebook page I love engaging with students, using creativity to convey a message in a fun way and interacting with the community at large.

So why am I such a crazed fan? Well there are a couple reasons.

1.       It’s not a fad and it’s here to stay- Social media is not a fad that will soon disappear and you can’t ignore all mention of. In fact, it’s here to stay. Look for these trends in 2011: QR codes, Social Commerce, Geo-location social media, Mobile, Mobile, and Mobile!

2.       The navigation of social media tools are a skill set needed for the 21^st century workforce.  So young students might engage quickly because social media is comfortable to them, but what about nontraditional students who;

a.       Are digital immigrants or…

b.      Have not had access to technology in a diverse way?

Many argue, “They won’t want to use social media tools and will experience a learning curve.” And yes, I agree. However, if we do not teach these students the skills needed to navigate social media outlets we are not preparing them for the skill set that the 21 C workforce demands.

3.       “Innovation favors the connected mind.”- Steven Johnson.  Steven Johnson talks about where good ideas come from. He argues that instead of Eureka! Moments good ideas are actually formed on a lot of small hunches. Guess where those small hunches come from? The people around you, your network and the “connected” mind.

4.       The power of a community. I am very involved in volunteer work and local initiatives. Social media is a way for me to harness my network to help better my community. Whether it’s a coat drive for a local elementary school, a survey for the neighborhood, or a resource needed social media has always pulled through.  Although past efforts in all of these areas have been successful the integration of social media has double numbers, tripled responses and provided an entire new set of resources.

The list could go on and on about my admiration for social, media. We are basically BFF’s.
